Sail from Scotland to Bremerhaven with Volvo Ocean Race skipper Andreas Hanakamp
Bookable for 1 or 2 weeks

There are sailing trips. There are training sessions. And there are rare opportunities to truly push a large cruising yacht to its full potential alongside one of the most experienced offshore sailors and trainers in the German-speaking world.

From 4 October, our Garcia Exploration 52 OCEAN LIFE will be sailing from Oban on the west coast of Scotland via Inverness to Bremerhaven.

At the helm this time is a very special man:

Andreas Hanakamp – founder and director of Segelwelt, Volvo Ocean Race skipper, Olympic sailor, offshore sailing professional and proven specialist in sail trim, safety and professional crew management.

This trip is no ordinary transfer voyage. It is a performance crossing on a large, heavy expedition and cruising yacht – and thus an exceptional opportunity for ambitious sailors and skippers who want to learn how to handle a yacht of this class safely, quickly, efficiently and with a professionally led crew.

PERFORMANCE ON LARGE CRUISING YACHTS

A 52-foot aluminium yacht is not a lightweight racing boat. That is precisely why good sail trim is crucial.

How do I get the best possible performance out of a heavy cruising yacht?

When is it worth changing sails, and which ones?

How do I trim for speed, balance and minimal rudder effort?

How do I minimise the strain on the rig, equipment and crew?

And how does the strategy change when a few hours’ sailing turn into several days at sea?

Under the guidance of Andreas Hanakamp, the passage becomes an intensive, high-level training session under real-world conditions.

SAFETY IS MORE THAN JUST EQUIPMENT

Professional safety doesn’t just come into play when something goes wrong.

It begins with passage planning, weather assessment, preparing the yacht, allocating tasks, communication, watch systems and proactive crew management.

Particularly on demanding deep-sea passages, the quality of leadership determines how effective a crew remains – and what safety reserves are still available even when conditions become more difficult.

We therefore focus intensively on:

  • Sail trim and performance of large cruising yachts
  • Heavy-weather and offshore sailing
  • Safety management on board
  • Crew management and leadership
  • Watch systems and stress management
  • Route planning and strategic route selection
  • Decision-making under real-world conditions
  • Efficient interaction between people, yacht and equipment

Not as a seminar in a training room, but out at sea.

TWO LEGS – AN EXCEPTIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME

LEG 1 | OBAN → INVERNESS

from 4 October | 1 week

The first leg takes us from the west coast of Scotland, from Oban to Inverness.

Scottish waters, tides, changing conditions and challenging navigation provide the backdrop for an intensive week of training with a particular focus on boat handling, trim, crew organisation and safety.

LEG 2 | INVERNESS → BREMERHAVEN

1 week

The second leg takes us from Inverness out into the North Sea and on to Bremerhaven.

Here, the training takes on an even stronger offshore character: longer legs, watch duties, weather strategy, crew energy management and the question of how to sail a large yacht quickly yet conservatively and safely over an extended period.

If you want the full experience, book both weeks from Oban to Bremerhaven.

WHO IS THIS VOYAGE INTENDED FOR?

For sailors who don’t just want to clock up miles.

For skippers who take responsibility for crews.

For Yachtmasters and aspiring Yachtmasters.

For owners of larger cruising yachts.

And for anyone who wants to understand how professional ocean sailors analyse, trim, handle and navigate a large yacht through challenging passages.

If you already have experience and want to take your skills to the next level, here you’ll gain something that’s hard to teach in traditional sailing courses:

the opportunity not just to listen to a professional, but to witness their decisions first-hand over the course of several days, to question them and to put them into practice yourself.

OCEAN LIFE × ANDREAS HANAKAMP

52-foot aluminium.
Scotland.
North Sea.
A real voyage.
Real decisions.
High-level training.

No artificial training scenarios.

We’ll sail a real voyage – and use every leg to train performance, safety and crew leadership to a professional standard.

Oban → Inverness → Bremerhaven.

One week or the full two-week crossing.

For anyone who doesn’t just want to sail large cruising yachts, but to truly master them.
