FAQ
Here you will find the most frequently asked questions and answers about the Ocean Life sailing trips.
Who is this offer intended for?
For all those who want to combine their fascination for nature with real expedition sailing.
If flora, fauna and geology inspire you just as much as wind, waves and the feeling of freedom – then you’ve come to the right place.
Our Ocean Life sailing trips are aimed at nature enthusiasts who want to get off the beaten track. Together we discover the special features of the animal and plant world, observe, document – and experience the sea at eye level.
You will sail on the Ocean Life expedition sailing boat. Sailing is just as much the focus as observing nature: if you wish, you can actively participate in route planning and boat handling and deepen your knowledge of seamanship and navigation.
How does an Ocean Life sailing trip look like?
Well organized, varied – and lots of fun to discover.
You can expect a real sailing safari with professional support, exciting moments in nature and the fulfilling feeling of being part of an expedition. Together we will immerse ourselves in the world of coastal habitats and experience them with all our senses.
At the beginning of the sailing trips, you will receive a detailed safety and boat briefing as well as an overview of the days ahead. The day usually starts between 08:00 and 09:00 with a breakfast together.
During the tour we provide you with high-quality Swarovski optics (CL Companion, EL Range Orange, spotting scope 20-60x). So you are perfectly equipped for dolphin, whale or bird watching.
After the route briefing, we sail for four to eight hours a day. Lunch is usually cooked on board. On the way, there is time for sailing maneuvers, snorkeling, birding or simply marveling. Everyday life on board is teamwork – everyone contributes equally, in the spirit of true seamanship.
We spend every night in a new bay or harbor. On land, we explore special places on coastal walks or short hikes. There is also time for swimming, snorkeling and – if desired – diving. In the evening, we usually round off the day with good food and local cuisine.
Do I have to be a sailor to take part?
No – you don’t have to be a sailing pro! Our sailing trips are designed in such a way that both beginners and experienced sailors get their money’s worth.
In the Canary Islands you can expect short strokes and stable winds, in the north (Hebrides, Lofoten, North Cape) the sailing becomes a little more challenging.
If you like, you can get actively involved in sailing – according to your mood and ability.
I have already sailed a lot - are the Ocean Life sailing trips still interesting for me?
In any case! Our sailing trips take you to challenging, unique natural areas – from tidal coasts to fjord systems.
Navigation, area studies and ship handling are an integral part of the program and our professional skippers are happy to pass on their knowledge.
Ocean Life is all about active discovery, learning and experience – even for experienced sailors.
I am a sailor and would like to learn more - can I get actively involved and be coached?
Absolutely! On our Ocean Life sailing trips, you can get as actively involved as you like – in route planning, maneuvers or navigation.
Our Yachtmaster instructors pass on their knowledge directly on board – practical, personal and with a real expedition feel.
I still need tide miles - are Ocean Life sailing trips suitable for this?
Yes, we sail in real tidal areas – so your miles count in full.
Important to know: Our focus is not on the distance, but on the experience of nature. Sailing with depth – in the best sense of the word.
Do I need to have previous knowledge of biology or natural history?
No – you don’t need any previous knowledge. But be warned: after an Ocean Life sailing trip, you’ll see the sea with different eyes – and you’re guaranteed to talk about it enthusiastically.
I am a nature photographer or biologist - are the Ocean Life sailing trips also exciting for me?
Absolutely! You will experience nature from a completely new perspective – directly from the expedition sailing boat.
Accompanied by experienced biologists, you will gain deep insights into the ecosystems of the areas. If you have specialist knowledge, we look forward to exchanging ideas on board.
Are Ocean Life sailing trips also suitable for children?
Yes – we are also happy to have young explorers on board.
Whether a sailing trip is suitable depends on the age and experience of the child. It’s best to read the description of each trip or contact us for an honest assessment.
Why is there such a wide price range between the berths?
The price depends on the occupancy: You can book a berth in the double cabin (standard price) or reserve your own cabin – for a surcharge of 80%.
What should I take with me?
You will find everything you need on the MCO packing list in the respective cruise description – so that you are perfectly prepared when you board.
